Happy New Year!

This Sunday we begin the new liturgical year. While we usually celebrate New Year's on January 1st, the Church celebrates the beginning of the Church year on the First Sunday of Advent. We are all familiar with the seasons of fall, winter, spring and summer. Different seasons also characterize the liturgical year. These seasons are Advent, Christmas, Ordinary Time, Lent, Triduum and Easter, and each of these seasons has its own liturgical color. The liturgical calendar follows a three year cycle; these are cycles A, B and C and we focus on a specific Gospel throughout each cycle:

• Year A-Matthew
• Year B-Mark
• Year C-Luke

We are now entering Year B so most of the Gospel readings we will be listening to on Sundays throughout this liturgical year will come from the Gospel of Mark.

Below is a liturgical calendar prepared by the Middle School Youth Group which shows us the different seasons of the year, the colors associated with those seasons, and special dates in those seasons. If you click it it will enlarge.

Este domingo comenzamos el nuevo año litúrgico. Mientras que usualmente celebramos el Año Nuevo el 1 de enero, la Iglesia celebra el comienzo del año litúrgico el primer domingo de adviento. Todos conocemos las estaciones de otoño, invierno, primavera y verano. Diferentes estaciones/tiempos también caracterizan al año litúrgico. Estos son los tiempos de adviento, navidad, tiempo ordinario, cuaresma, triduo pascual y pascua, y cada uno de estos tiempos tiene un color que lo caracteriza. El calendario litúrgico sigue un ciclo de tres años; estos son los años A, B y C, y nos enfocamos en un evangelio cada año:

• Año A-Mateo
• Año B-Marcos
• Año C-Lucas

Estamos comenzando el Año B así que la mayoría de las lecturas de los evangelios que escucharemos los domingos de este año vendrán del evangelio según San Marcos. A continuación hay un calendario litúrgico preparado por el grupo juvenil de 6 a 8 grados que nos muestra los diferentes tiempos del año litúrgico, los colores asociados con esos tiempos, y fechas especiales en esos tiempos.
